By far the most common tree species in the area, Ponderosa Pine was the economic backbone of the early timber industry in Pagosa Springs. This long-lived species can obtain heights of over 100 feet and girth of over 4 feet. In the early 1900's, a Ponderosa was found with 1,047 growh rings! When building near these giants, remember that Ponderosa Pine is a desert species that requires minimal amounts of irrigation and does not tolerate root damage. It is a good idea to consult a professional before your construction begins around these magnificent trees that are a major part of the magic of Pagosa Country.
